Last week, the report of the Fund For Peace for 2012 was released. The
report ranked Nigeria as one of the top 10 failed states in Africa and
the 14th in the world. The immediate reaction of the government was to
call the ranking baseless. Actually, the ranking was not for 2012 when
things seem to have worsened but for January to December 2011. The
reaction of the government is not unexpected because such ranking means
that the government has failed. Nigerian governments’ behaviour is like
that of students who praise themselves if they score A or B in
examination but claim to have been “given” the mark by the lecturer if
the score is a C or D. Governments do not accept deserved poor marks.
